General Thought, at Your Command

What are your general thoughts on the way of the samurai, the importance of relationships, violence, and death?

Overall, I like the ways of the samurai and if I were living in feudal Japan I would certainly strive to be one. The main thing I like about the way they act is the chivalry they show to everyone they come in contact with. The samurais like Lord Akiyama and even Murakami act very respectable towards everyone, even if they are lower in status. When Taro is a young boy, Akiyama is always nice to him even though he lives in a stable and tends to his horses. He does not care about rank, which shows a lot about his character. Also, when Taro becomes involved with Aki he knows that he must speak to her father because it is improper to write letters without getting the father’s consent. It is unfortunate that in today’s society this chivalry is not seen more because the world would be a better place. Today, it is almost acceptable for a couple to elope and never tell their parents, but in feudal Japan this would have severely frowned upon and they would be punished. If even half of the rules of the samurai were present in modern day society the world would be a much better place because people would have a greater respect for their neighbor, which is something that appears to have been lost in time.

I agree with Snorlax. I would have loved to be a Samurai. Samurai were honorable, loyal, and trustworthy. These are great qualities for anyone to manifest in themselves, no matter where they are from. If everyone possessed such noble characteristics, then most of problems in the world would not be so prominent. As made evident is this novel, mentors are extremely important. Without the training of Togan, Taro would not have been able to embrace his lifestyle and climb the ladder to becoming a great samurai. The acts of chivalry should still be applied today, for then men and women would have greater respect for each other.
